![]() Yet these stories must not break the player's freedom. It seems we can expect that there will be characters with their own stories, told through Events. Using the same pieces that are available to players, the developers have created some pre-set races to populate the Story Worlds with. The metaplot is dead, long live the player's story! It's a schism between metaplot and the fantasy races. This kind of story-telling will no longer be possible with AoW4, since no pieces of the setting can be tied to the races anymore. A basic example is that in AoW3 goblin society, war parties consisted of warg riding cavalry and elite beetle riders. In the new system, there are some limitations imposed so that no fantasy 'form' possesses any lore characteristics. I personally plan to take the Story World modding tools through their paces to see what kinds of fantasy races, factions, and their stories I can create.Īnother change from the past is a level of thematic control over the game's fantasy units. Rather than needing to build a level to create stories, we can generate it and set scripting parameters the create our own exciting Events, with far less effort. What is the benefit? Those of us who don't have the experience, time or desire to put in the work of being a level designer can now make our own Story Worlds. Story Worlds will presumably have some set-piece and unique events, and this may play a bit more like Endless Legend's racial stories, so it's not as if there is no plot to be told, but it's a significant shift. Rather than a story-teller presenting their tale to the player, it is the player who pieces together their own story from the random events and the actions they take. Random events trigger, like in other 4x games such as Stellaris or (to some extent, though there are differences) Endless Legend. In AoW4, this approach is replaced with the new breed. Like watching a TV show or reading a fantasy novel, this kind of scripting turns the designer into a story-teller. As you play through a map, its plot unfolds, telling you the story of a cast of fantasy characters and their exploits. This is the Heroes of Might and Magic style 4x. A designer could script a pre-set story for the player. In the past, level design was a part of the Age of Wonders series. Are these good or bad things? Get some popcorn, because this is a long one. Some notable design decisions are moving the AoW series from its roots and into a new space.
